Located at the top of the Caribbean and close to Europe’s shipping lanes, New Providence (present day Nassau, Bahamas) became a thriving pirate haven in 1703. It remained as such until the English cleared out the pirate base in 1718. The place was a buccaneer’s dream: surrounded by dangerous shoals, protected by a pirate fort, void of laws and loaded with food, spirits, gambling and women.
