The Spyglass

Upon hearing from the crow’s nest the cry, “Sail, ho!,” the captain would raise his spyglass to determine an incoming ship’s type, nationality, direction, speed and quantity of crew and guns. This bought him some time to weigh these important considerations before risking a pursuit.
